Rob Thomas writes about hip-hop theater:
What is hip-hop theater?
The medium, which encompasses elements of spoken word, music and dance, is so new that even those who practice it have a hard time defining it. This spring, University of Wisconsin-Madison students will join with some of the top performers in the evolving art form to do just that.
“It’s so fresh and dynamic that the architects are just kind of figuring out what it is,” says Willie Ney, director of the UW Multicultural Arts Initiative.
Good art requires freshness and originality. These types of hip-hop events epitomize those qualities.

Roger Sideman wrote about UCSC’s spoken word aspirations:
UC Santa Cruz may not be a big player in the world of college sports, but an oddball group of romantics, comedians and ranting social critics are carving out a new niche: competitive performance poetry.
Their venue is the poetry slam, an event where judges appraise each poet in turn on content and performance, and then render a score from zero to 10 held high on big cards a la the Olympics.
UCSC’s five-member slam team took home the gold medal at the national college championships in 2005 and is once again eyeing the top prize in 2007.
“Slams are good for forcing poets to up their game,” said Natalie Bulkley-Ashodian, the coach of UCSC’s slam team and a recent grad. “We’re not only are competing, but eating and sleeping poetry”
Highlighting UCSC’s standing as a leader in the national spoken-word movement, the university hosted a series of workshops and professional performances this week, as well as a competition that will determine which local poets will travel to this April’s national competition in Michigan.
While also fun, competition pushes young spoken word artists to try their best. Additionally, spectators enjoy the vibrancy of these spoken word events.
