Suburbia by Ragan Fox Monday, June 25th, 2007

In the following video, Ragan Fox performs his spoken word poem, Suburbia:

That’s definitely a unique performance poem. I like it. Suburban life always makes a good topic. What do you think?

How to Talk About Peace Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Watch the following spoken word video and tell me what you think:

I do not see the point of the flag, because it certainly does not symbolize peace. What do you think about that poem? How do you feel about peace and the situation in Iraq?

“Diallo” by Bassey Ikpi Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

In the following video, spoken word artist Bassey Ikpi performs her poem, Diallo:

I liked the poem. She refers to Amadou Diallo. In 1999, four plain-clothed NYC cops murdered Diallo by shooting him 41 times. The police claim to have mistook Diallo as a since-captured rapist, and claim to have mistook Diallo’s wallet as a gun. Of course, Diallo had no gun or weapon. Unfortunately, the cops escaped conviction by getting the trial moved to a new venue.

Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Have you watched the show Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry? Mos Def hosts the show. It airs on HBO. I believe it has run 5 season so far, all of which I enjoyed immensely. I even have them on DVD.

I have no affiliation with the show. I recommend it to you simply for the reason that I love the show.

Basically, in each episode of the show features a sequence of spoken word poets who each come out and recite their spoken word poem. They keep the show diverse, with performers from a variety of religions, races, places, and cultures.

The Revolution Will Be Poeticized Monday, June 4th, 2007

In the following video, Tribal Raine performs her poem The Revolution Poeticized in Albany, NY.

Great poem! Granted, I like any poem based on Gil Scott-Heron’s classic poem, The Revolution Won’t be Televised.

You won’t hear about the revolution on the television, but you will hear about it in poetry and the arts. The powers that be control the airwaves, but the people speak through poetry. What do you think?

Slam Poet, Obie Friday, June 1st, 2007

I just found the following spoken word video on YouTube:

I like it. I don’t understand the reason for the video effects, though. What do you think?
