Spoken Word and Dance Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

I was recently informed about this video about Marc Bamuthi Joseph, who is a spoken word poet that also incorporates dance.

It seems original to me, which I think is always good with art. What do you think?

Talk is the Topic of Conversation Monday, March 10th, 2008

I found the following neat video in which Angela Gegg performs her poem entitled Talk is the Topic of Conversation:

The poem has a nice flow. The words fit very well together. And it is short enough that it does not get too confusing. I like it. Who does not like to bash gossip?

What do you think of the poem?

Big Brother Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

I like the following spoken word video very much:

The video and music goes with the poem excellently. I love the way he talks to “Big Brother” like an actual person. Maybe I like this poem so much because 1984 is my favorite book. Regardless, the poem has great artistic qualities. What do you think?

Sixth Grade Class by Patricia Smith Saturday, January 26th, 2008

In the following video, slam poet Patricia Smith performs her poem Sixth Grade Class at the National Poetry Slam:

She performs very powerfully. I like the poem. I like how she connects the idea of poetry with the children’s view of death. I shuttered at the imitation of children almost excitedly raising their hands about knowing someone who died.

What do you think?

Despite the long introduction, I like that video a lot. The poet has a great performance style and a points worth hearing. What do you think?

Goofy Christmas Poem Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

I found the following goofy little Christmas poem on YouTube:

While far from the best poem ever, I find it funny in a silly sort of way. Consider me posting it here as my way of wishing you all happy holidays.

If by Rudyard Kipling Thursday, December 20th, 2007

In the following video, Khayav recites the poem If by Rudyard Kipling:

I like that poem, and I enjoy hearing it recited. Incidentally, I just found out that it was Ayn Rand’s favorite poem. What do you think?

Violet’s Bed by Amsterdam Café Thursday, December 13th, 2007

In the following video, Brenda C. Petrakos performs her poem “Violet’s Bed” at the Amsterdam Café in North Hollywood, CA:

I like poems in a story format like that because you can easily follow the story while also trying to get at the deeper meaning. Brenda Petrakos performs well in this video and her story poem captivated me. What do you think?

Ryan Sarafolean in Minneapolis Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

In the following video, Ryan Sarafolean performs a spoken word poem at the Minneapolis Public Library:

During the first minute of his poem, I thought he was just prefacing his poem with a story. I realized it was the actual poem once he started using a lot of metaphors. Anyway, I like the poem. I cannot imagine children so oppressed that they cannot even dream. I hope for better days, when no children will have to suffer from war and poverty. What do you think?

Spoken word artist Gina ‘Ginger’ Bernal performs her poem “Choking” in the following video:

After this video was filmed, she went on to play along side John Travolta in a Love Song for Bobby Long. I hope to see more spoken word work from her, though. What do you think?
